NEW YORK -- It may not be most fans' idea of baseball memorabilia, but Fender has just released a line of MLB-themed Stratocasters -- that's the iconic electric guitar made famous in the 1960s by the likes of Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton and the Beatles, to name just a few -- and last week, I had the opportunity to give the Yankees version, adorned in pinstripes over a representation of the New York skyline, a workout.

And I must say, it passed the test, although at $799 it may not be for everybody. If your passion is baseball rather than guitars, there are probably more meaningful items of memorabilia you can pick up for that kind of money. And if you're more of a player -- of guitar, that is -- than a watcher, you can get a just-as-good MIM (Made in Mexico) Strat, which this one is, with a standard paint job for about half the price.

That being said, the finish on the guitar is beautiful, it plays easily, as all Strats do, it stayed in tune well even after I had to put it down for a few days to go on a road trip, and it sounded great even through my practice amp. (And even with me "playing it.") Believe me, I hated having to send it back.

Again, it's not meant for everybody, and if you're just looking for something Yankee-themed to hang on the wall, $800 might seem a bit steep.

But if you love the Yankees and love rocking out on a Strat, you will love this guitar. It's geared to a pretty limited, specialized audience, no doubt, but Fender must think there's got to be enough people into both baseball and axes to make this venture worthwhile.

They have guitars painted in the colors of 12 MLB teams. Here's the link if you want more info.
