NEW YORK -- Joe Girardi doesn't generally give away his plans. So when he divulges state secrets, he is often a little guarded.

So while Alfonso Soriano will likely play against a righty again, it doesn't sound like it will be often or perhaps any time soon. Here is Exhibit A:

"Most of his struggles have been off of right-handers, not off of left-handers," Joe Girardi said after the Yankees' 2-1 win over the Oakland A's. "That is why I ran him out there again today. He has had good at-bats against left-handers. He'll continue to play against left-handers. We'll get him going."

Soriano snapped an 0-for-16 stretch with an RBI single in the second off lefty Drew Pomeranz. He added a double in the seventh off Pomeranz when Coco Crisp lost a ball in center. Soriano is hitting .195 in 123 at-bats against righties. Versus lefties, he is a .303 batter in 66 at-bats.

With Carlos Beltran's return as strictly a DH, the Yankees are a better defensive team with Ichiro Suzuki in right. In the eighth, when Ichiro replaced Soriano, he made a catch in the gap that Soriano likely wouldn't have made. It may have changed Adam Warren's afternoon.

Ichiro again is hitting lefties better than righties. Against righties, he is hitting .286 in 70 at-bats. Versus lefties, he is at .375 in 24 at-bats. Still, it sounds like Ichiro will have the chance to add to those numbers against righties.

Beltran survives: Beltran (bone spurs) said he felt fine after his first major league game in three weeks. He was hitless.

"I didn't see him favor anything," Girardi said.
