Brett Gardner gave Joe Girardi exactly what he was looking for on Tuesday night.

A few hours before Tuesday’s game, Girardi was asked why the Yankees had played well on the road but struggled at home this season.

“This ballpark, there’s going to be more runs scored,” the manager said. “And we have not hit the ball out of the ballpark a whole lot, and that probably has something to do with it.”

On cue, Gardner drilled a two-run homer to right field in the third inning that proved to be the game winner in the Yankees’ 3-1 victory over Toronto.

“I was just looking for a pitch to hit,” the Yankees left fielder said afterward.

The problem for the Yankees is they haven't had many pitches to hit like that at home of late.

The Yanks haven’t had a multihomer game at home since May 17. That’s a span of 11 home games. They are 5-6. Four of those wins have come in games started by Masahiro Tanaka.

So Girardi hopes that they can get more power out of their offense at home, where they are one game under .500. The Yanks are five games over .500 on the road.

Gardner has done his part at home, hitting .333 (21-for-63) with 13 runs, four homers and 12 RBIs in his past 15 home games.

Pen writes solid ending: The back end of the Yankees' pen had a dominant night on Tuesday. Dellin Betances struck out three in two scoreless innings. He has allowed just eight hits and one walk in 23 1/3 innings with 38 strikeouts in his past 16 appearances. David Robertson tossed a scoreless ninth for his 17th save in 19 chances.

“They’ve been great,” Gardner said. “They both just shut the door.”

Jeter Meter: Derek Jeter went 2-for-4 on Tuesday. He's 12-for-27 (.444) with seven runs, two doubles, three RBIs and a .467 OBP over his past seven games.
