CLEVELAND -- Another day, another injury. Today it's Carlos Beltran, who reported some swelling behind his right knee this morning and is out of the lineup tonight. That is why Brian McCann is the DH and Francisco Cervelli is behind the plate. Joe Girardi didn't seem to think Beltran's injury was particularly serious -- as of now, no tests are scheduled -- and did not rule out the possibility that Beltran might be available to pinch-hit tonight.
Here's the lineup Girardi is sending out for the first of this four-game series against the Indians and their right-handed starter, Justin Masterson:
Derek Jeter SS
Shane Greene RHP
Green has been up with the Yankees three other times this season, but this will be his first major league start. Greene made one appearance this season, on April 24 in Boston, allowing three unearned runs in 1/3 of an inning, thanks to a Derek Jeter error. Greene also walked three of the five batters he faced. But Girardi said he has pitched better lately for Triple-A Scranton -- in his last appearance, on July 2, he worked six scoreless innings in a 1-0 RailRiders loss. Overall, Greene was 5-2 with a 4.61 ERA in 15 appearances, 13 of them starts . . . Masterson is 4-4 with a 3.30 ERA in 12 games (eight starts) against the Yankees. He has never lost to the Yankees at Progressive Field (3-0, 0.38 ERA in three career starts).
