Injury bug won't stop biting

CLEVELAND -- Aside from the potentially-catastrophic Masahiro Tanaka elbow injury, the Yankees suffered two more relatively minor injuries before Wednesday's game against the Indians.

Brett Gardner was not in the lineup, and it was revealed that he has been troubled by lower abdominal pain since Friday night, when he suffered what he believes to have been a stomach bug that kept him out of the lineup Saturday in Minnesota. But the pain lingered and after Tuesday night's game was examined by a doctor for a suspected hernia, which the examination apparently ruled out. Gardner said he felt "much better" Wednesday and expects to be able to play on Thursday.

That was pretty standard stuff, but what happened to Carlos Beltran was not. Beltran, already limited to DH duty due to a bone spur in his right elbow that makes it painful for him to throw, had sat out two games with swelling behind his right knee. But he was originally in Wednesday's lineup -- until batting practice, when he fouled one off the side of the cage and it caromed back into his face. The Yankees scratched him with what they are calling "facial contusions." Derek Jeter, originally given the night off because Girardi wanted to use him in all three games against the Orioles this weekend, was hurried back into the lineup as the DH. No word on how long Beltran will be out.
