NEW YORK -- The Yankees (48-47) began the second half with a boost by their big free-agent signings, Jacoby Ellsbury, Carlos Beltran and Brian McCann, who provided all the RBIs.

Hitting the Els out of it: In the fifth, Ellsbury unlocked a 2-2 game with a two-run homer. It was his seventh of the year.

Pitching in: David Phelps continues to pitch well. On Friday, he went 6⅓ innings, allowing three runs (two earned). He gave up two solo homers among his six hits. He struck out seven and walked just one.

Dealin': All-Star Dellin Betances protected a one-run lead by recording the final two outs of the seventh, stranding a runner on second. Of Betances' five outs, three were strikeouts. He did not allow a hit or walk.

D-Rob: David Robertson picked up his 24th save.

Jeter Meter: Derek Jeter picked up two singles on the night. He has 40 hits since June 10th, which is the most among MLB shortstops in that span, according to Katie Sharp.

Toe tapping: A little more than a week before the All-Star break, hitting coach Kevin Long had a talk with McCann. There was too much wasted movement, Long said, including an extraneous toe tap. McCann was receptive to the adjustments, finishing the first half by going 12-for-33 (.364).

To begin the second half, McCann nailed an RBI double to give the Yankees a 1-0 lead in the first.

Belting Beltran: Fresh off the DL, Beltran nailed a two-out, RBI single in the third to give the Yankees a 2-1 lead. Beltran was on the seven-day concussion list but said he didn't think he ever had a concussion. He said the team was just being careful.

A little help, please: After Beltran gave Phelps the lead, Phelps' defense gave it back. Fielding errors by Brian Roberts and Jeter led to a run and a tie game after 3½ innings.

Gardner hit: Brett Gardner was hit on his left foot by a fastball. He stayed in the game and scored the Yankees' first run on McCann's double.

Long balls: The Reds' Brayan Pena hit two solo shots, one in the third and another in the seventh -- both off Phelps.

On deck: A quick turnaround with a 1:05 p.m. start Saturday. Brandon McCarthy (0-1, 1.35 ERA) matches up against Alfredo Simon (12-3, 2.70). McCarthy is 0-2 with a 14.73 ERA in three appearances (two starts) against the Reds.
