NEW YORK -- Prior to tonight's game with the Texas Rangers, the Yankees placed Kelly Johnson on the 15-day disabled list with a groin strain suffered in the 10th inning of Tuesday night's game and recalled RHP Chris Leroux from Triple-A Scranton to shore up their depleted bullpen after using seven relievers in the marathon 2-1, 14-inning win.
Johnson, playing his first major league game in right field, made an excellent running catch in the top of the 10th on J.P. Arencibia's drive, but came out of that unscathed; he suffered the injury to his left groin in the bottom of the inning running out a groundout to second base. He was sent for an MRI during the game but the results were not announced last night.
The Yankees also announced that RHP Bruce Billings had been designated for assignment.
