Tex: 'It's still really sore'

NEW YORK -- Mark Teixeira is out of the New York Yankees' lineup for second consecutive game because of the stitches in his left pinkie. As for when he returns, that is anyone's guess.

"It's still really sore," Teixeira said.

Since he has never had the injury before, Teixeira said he couldn't predict if he will play this weekend.

"I can't really grip the bat," Teixeira said.

Nonetheless, Teixeira expected to test the pinkie out slightly prior to Friday's game with some tee and toss in the batting cage.

Teixeira hurt the finger sliding in in the eighth inning of Wednesday's victory over the Detroit Tigers.

Teixeira has had a variety of injuries, forcing him to miss 30 of the Yankees' first 114 games.

Tanaka throws again: Masahiro Tanaka (elbow) played catch again Friday. He threw 25 times from both 60- and 90-feet for a total of 50 tosses. Tanaka will play catch again on Saturday and then take Sunday off. The earliest he will return to the majors is September.

Mr. Rogers' Nieborhood: It will probably be less than 100 pitches for Yankees' starter Esmil Rogers, because he threw 18 pitches on Tuesday. While this would be his normal side session day, Joe Girardi said, since Rogers was in a game, he believed it likely took more out of him.

Return Man: The Yankees brought up Bryan Mitchell to offer protection if Rogers is unable to give them any sort of length. Mitchell, 23, was 3-1 with a 2.88 ERA in five starts at Triple-A. Mitchell has never gotten the attention compared to some of the other Yankee pitching prospects, but he has some potential.
