Beltran takes another shot

NEW YORK -- Instead of being the Yankees' designated hitter on Wednesday, Carlos Beltran had a date with team doctor Chris Ahmad on Wednesday.

His right elbow is hurting again. Dr. Ahmad had Beltran take his third cortisone shot of the season -- which is a lot -- and Beltran hopes to be back playing by Friday.

"Hopefully, it will only be a day or two," Joe Girardi said.

Beltran felt something in his elbow during his swing on Tuesday night.

"[Beltran] said it is not unusual. From time to time he'll get a sensation in there and it goes away," Girardi said. "Today, he woke up and he felt a little something still. That has not been the case. So I took him out of the lineup."

Beltran recently returned to the outfield after spending most of the year as the team's DH because of the bone spur in the elbow that will eventually require surgery. Beltran seemed to think that the reoccurring elbow issue is not because of playing the field and sounded like he could be back in right again.

Derek Jeter DHed for the third time in the last four games. Originally, Jeter was going to play short, Girardi said. Stephen Drew played at short.

Jeter had two hits, finishing 2-for-5 with a walk.

Phelps' future: Joe Girardi said the Yankees will try to bring up David Phelps as reliever. Since they have limited time and he is returning from inflammation in his right elbow, they believe that gives them the best chance to receive the most production from the righty.
