NEW YORK -- On Saturday, the Yankees will honor Hall of Famer Joe Torre by retiring his No. 6 jersey and giving him a Monument Park plaque during a pregame ceremony.
"It is well-deserved," current Yankees manager Joe Girardi said.
Girardi played for Torre and served as his bench coach.
"I've always said that one of Joe's greatest qualities was he had the ability to make people think that everything was going to be all right if we stuck together and worked hard and did our job," Girardi said. "He was good at keeping the noise out and letting us focus on our jobs."
Beltran Update: Carlos Beltran was scheduled to take some pregame swings with the hope he could possibly return to action Saturday. On Wednesday, Beltran had his third cortisone shot of the year for his balky right elbow.
Tanaka Update: Masahiro Tanaka will throw batting practice Saturday, which is a pretty big step in his return from a slight UCL ligament tear in his right elbow.
Girardi's numbers: I mentioned to Girardi that he won't be able to have his number retired if he changes it with each title. For Girardi to be accomplished enough to receive such an honor, he would need to win multiple titles. If he does that, he would be switching numbers often.
"I'd like to have that problem," Girardi said.
