Game 122: Yankees vs. Mariners

August, 20, 2010
9:51 p.m.: Cano hit three homers in three games in the cleanup spot. He went 0-for-4 with two Ks tonight. Thames, hitting for Swisher, flies out to end it. Check back in a bit for more on A-Rod's injury. Mariners 6, Yankees 0.

9:45 p.m.: Garrett Olson is in for Hernandez. King Felix struck out eight, walked three and allowed four hits in eight innings.

9:42 p.m.: Eduardo Nunez is at third and Ramiro Pena is at short. Jeter's night ends early.

9:34 p.m.: Gardner's single to left is just the fourth hit all night off of Hernandez, who shut out the Yanks in the Bronx on June 30.

9:27 p.m.: Gaudin on in relief of Burnett. Burnett allowed six runs on 12 hits in seven innings.

8:57 p.m.: Burnett gets a gift from Chone Figgins, who lines to first and gets Ichiro doubled off. But Branyan - the next Mariners hitter - takes Burnett deep for the second time tonight. Mariners 6, Yankees 0

8:54 p.m.: Chad Gaudin warming in the Yanks bullpen after Burnett walks Ichiro to open the sixth.

8:47 p.m.: Meanwhile, Cervelli works a walk to load the bases for Ramiro Pena with none out in the bottom of the fifth. Pena strikes out swinging.

8:45 p.m.: It's unclear why Austin Kearns hit for A-Rod in the fourth. Rodriguez jogged gingerly to first after grounding out to third in his only at-bat in the second. He spoke before the game about running the bases with caution.

8:29 p.m.: Jeter lines a double to left with one out and none on in the fourth.

8:22 p.m.: Burnett gets out of it as Gutierrez grounds to Pena, who throws to second for the force out. Mariners 5, Yankees 0

8:19 p.m.: More boos as Burnett throws ball four to Lopez. Bases loaded, two out for Gutierrez.

8:15 p.m.: Girardi, Cervelli and A-Rod are out to talk to Burnett after he allowed a single to Figgins. Plenty of boos from the big crowd in the Bronx.

8:13 p.m.: Ichiro grounds into a force out to second but beats out Cano's relay to first. Tuiasosopo scores on the play from third. Mariners 5, Yankees 0.

8:11 p.m.: Burnett heard a smattering of boos after giving up a bloop single to right to Josh Wilson in the top of the fourth.

8:07 p.m.: Mariners hitters are 8-for-16 against Burnett tonight after Matt Tuiasosopo singled to right to lead off the fourth.

8:03 p.m.: Ramiro Pena wraps into a 4-6-3 double play to end the third. Mariners 4, Yankees 0

7:55 p.m.: Franklin Gutierrez singles to left with two outs. He then steals second and scores on Casey Kotchman's single, which slips under the glove of a diving Robinson Cano. Mariners 4, Yankees 0

7:43 p.m.: Alex Rodriguez trots slowly to first after grounding softly to third in his first at-bat since he left after the fourth inning of Monday's game aginst Detroit with a strained left calf.

7:41 p.m.: Jeter's 6-6-3 double play ends the top of the second and prevents John Wilson from scoring. Mariners 3, Yankees 0

7:30 p.m.: As our own Wally Matthews pointed out earlier this week, Derek Jeter has hit into an inordinate amount of double plays in his career. He just hit into No. 231 in the top of the first. Mariners 3, Yankees 0

7:25 p.m.: Burnett gets Adam Moore to go down swinging to end the top of the first. Mariners 3, Yankees 0

7:23 p.m.: Derek Jeter misfired on his relay throw on that potential double-play grounder from Casey Kotchman. Jeter short-hopped it to first and Mark Teixeira couldn't come up with it.

7:17 p.m.: Joe Girardi and trainer Gene Monahan came out to check on Francisco Cervelli after the catcher slipped on a bat on the on-deck circle while chasing Jose Lopez's foul pop-up. Cervelli seemed fine and is back behind the plate.

7:16 p.m.: Russell Branyan hits a three-run homer to right-center. Burnett puts the Yankees in a 3-0 hole after 11 pitches. Mariners 3, Yankees 0

7:15 p.m.: The Yankees announced that they have sent minor-league pitcher Zach McAlister to Cleveland to complete the Austin Kearns trade. He was 8-10 with a 5.09 ERA in Triple-A this season.

7:10 p.m.: Ichiro Suzuki hits A.J. Burnett's second pitch back up the middle for a single to lead things off for Seattle.
