Curtis Granderson has been “one of a few guys” to set a major-league record. He’s also been “the first guy of a season” to reach a record. But prior to Thursday, he’s never been of a team that’s made major league history.
“The fact that we as a team have done something that all the teams that have ever played this game have never done before, especially all of the offenses, it’s pretty neat,” said Granderson, whose eighth-inning grand slam gave the Yankees a major league record three grand slams in one game.
Granderson finished the day with 103 RBIs and 36 home runs on the year. He is now second in the American League in home runs (one behind Toronto’s Jose Bautista) and leads all of baseball in RBIs.
He recaptured the team lead in home runs from Mark Teixeira with his homer.
CANO CHANGES THE GAME: Granderson's grand slam set the record. Russell Martin's grand slam gave the Yankees the lead for good. But it was Robinson Cano's home run that changed the momentum in the game.
The Yankees trailed 7-2 in the fifth inning when Cano came to the plate with one out and the bases loaded. With his grand slam, Cano cut the lead to 7-6 and the Yankees never looked back from that point. Cano's grand slam was his 22nd home run of the year and he now has 93 RBIs on the season.
"As soon as that ball left his bat, kind of had that mentality that we're going to win this game," outfielder Nick Swisher said. "After that, then Russ', what a game man, that was fun to watch."
