Cashman: Yankees have options at catcher

Yankees GM Brian Cashman said he "had no idea'' if Francisco Cervelli, on the disabled list after suffering a concussion in a home-plate collision on Sept. 8 in Baltimore, would recover in time for the playoffs.

But in the event Cervelli can't go, the GM said he was not concerned about heading into the post-season with either Jesus Montero or Austin Romine as the backup catcher to Russell Martin.

"It's not an issue,'' Cashman said. "We have alternatives. We have Montero and we have Romine, so those are the alternatives.''

Montero, coming off his first season of AAA ball, has hit well in his first 10 games of major-league play, batting .286 with three home runs and 10 RBI. But his defense remains suspect, and he was replaced after seven innings on September 11 by Romine, considered a superior defensive catcher who had only a handful of games in AAA before joining the Yankees earlier that afternoon.

"Obviously, we'd like to get Cervelli back healthy, because he knows our pitchers better than the other two guys,'' Cashman said. "But obviously, their ceilings are higher. So even if it is a problem, they are our solutions.''
