Russell Martin on his third-inning slide

By Andrew Marchand

When the game was still a game, Russell Martin had the slide. On Derek Jeter's two-run double in the third, Martin nearly caught up to Jorge Posada.

When he reached home, a relay nearly got him. But Martin slid feet-first around the plate and before a tag and then used his left hand to sneak in.

"It is kind of what I do when it is a bang-bang play," Martin said. "[Alex] Avila kind of gave me the back of plate. I kind of slid sideways and just wiped the plate with my hand."
