Hughes' excellence comes with a "Bullet"
By Andrew Marchand
No Yankee starter has begun the way Phil Hughes has since “Bullet” Bob Turley in 1958, according to Elias. The Bullet was 6-0 with an 0.83 ERA after six starts. He went on to win the Cy Young, finishing 21-7 with a 2.98 ERA.
He is the youngest pitcher to start undefeated after five decisions since a young Charles Edward Ford was working his way up to his chairmanship. Whitey, just 21, began 9-0 in 1950.
