Yankee fan saves a run
Momentarily, anyway. The Yankees got a break when -- with a runner on first and lefthander Clay Rapada inexplicably pitching to right-handed slugger Evan Longoria -- a fan in a Yankee jersey performed a Jeffrey Maier on a fly ball to deep right field. Nick Swisher, who leaped unsuccessfuly for the ball, immediately signalled that he had been interfered with, and after a brief conference, the umpires, who originally awarded Longoria a two-run homer, came up with a compromise -- a double, with the runners returned to second and third.
The reprieve was short-lived, however, when the next hitter, Matt Joyce, punched a single that brought both runners home, giving the Rays an 8-2 lead in the bottom of the seventh.
