Eppley excited to be with Yankees
The promotion to the Bronx surprised reliever Cody Eppley.
"To get the chance to come up here with this club, this early in the season, I was definitely excited," Eppley said Thursday afternoon in the clubhouse. "I'm excited to be here and I'm happy to be here in this clubhouse with all these guys, it's a blessing."
The Yankees called up Eppley after they placed left fielder Brett Gardner on the disabled list on Wednesday night. Eppley, 26, was informed around 11:30 p.m. on Wednesday and flew out of Rochester to the Bronx at 10:45 a.m. He was playing this season with Scranton Wilkes-Barre and had tossed 6 1/3 innings of scoreless ball.
"It's been a whirlwind," Eppley said. "Finding out last night to packing up stuff and then flying out here this morning, it's been an exciting couple of hours."
Eppley was claimed off waivers from Texas on April 5, and said he was happy to start a new chapter. He pitched in 10 games for Texas last season, posting a 1-1 record with an 8.00 ERA. While he struggled in his short time with Texas, he called it an awesome experience.
"It's the same game, I just kind of let me nerves get in to me a little bit and that caused some of the way it went last year," Eppley said. "I was happy with my 10 games of last year.'
The right-hander has a four-pitch repertoire, featuing a fastball, slider, sinker and changeup. He has not been told what his role will be, as he is the eighth man in the crowded bullpen, but is eager to do whatever is needed. The Yankees played Minnesota on Thursday.
"I'm just getting ready to help the ballclub however I can," Eppley said. "Whatever that role is, I'm excited to be able to do that."
He added: "It's awesome to be with this ballclub and the guys in the clubhouse. It's a blessing a pleasure. This franchise and everything that goes along with it, it's unbelievable, it's an awesome ride."
