First Pitch: CC says 'I can do better'
By Andrew Marchand
CC Sabathia is 13-4 with a 3.42 ERA and he knows it is not good enough.
"I can do a lot better," Sabathia said. "Especially [since] I have had a tough time not holding the leads. That has been the biggest thing that has been bothering me so I look to go out and make pitches and if I do get a lead, not to give it up."
In his last two starts against the Rays and Jays, the Yankees have given Sabathia a lead and he has failed to hold on to either. Sabathia knows his job is to deliver as the ace, but he doesn't put anymore pressure on himself. As a younger man in Cleveland after Bartolo Colon left, Sabathia would try to be Superman instead of just being himself.
"I always felt like if we had a losing streak, I need to go out and throw a shutout and have some amazing game," Sabathia said. "As I have gotten older and made a lot of big starts, I just go out and do the same thing that I always do."
Now, though, he doesn't get into what is going on around him, if the Yankees are struggling or if they are not.
"I wish I could tell you guys I feel some added pressure, but I don't," Sabathia said. "I always feel like that, every start."
UP NOW: My column on the Yankees' blowout of the O's. It was a throwback game.
ON DECK: Sabathia (13-4, 3.42) vs. Joe Saunders. First pitch is at 7:05 p.m.
QUESTION OF THE DAY: Do you think CC is still an ace or has he regressed.
