Tex back on Monday, pending physical
By Wallace Matthews
TORONTO -- Mark Teixeira will have one more workout today in Tampa and rejoin the Yankees in New York on Monday, but it is still undetermined if he will be ready to return to action for the first game of the season-ending three-game series with the Red Sox that begins Monday night.
"He'll see the doctor tomorrow and see if he's cleared to play," said Joe Girardi, who added he "thinks" Teixeira will be able to play.
"My thinking is (he'll play) first base, but I'll talk to him and see what he thinks," Girardi said.
Teixeira has missed 29 of the last 30 games with a Grade 1 calf strain, and the Yankees have gone 16-13 over that stretch. When Teixeira went down on August 27, the Yankees had a 3 1/2-game lead over the Baltimore Orioles in the AL East; at the start of play today, the teams were tied for first place.
“It’s affected us," Girardi said of Teixeira's absence. "It seemed like everyone was throwing lefthanders against us and Tex is a huge bat against lefthanders. This will be the first time we’ll have our whole lineup for a long time, which is really good. It will make our lineup different. It gives you the ability not to stack lefthanders, which is something that we’ve had to fight and at times we’ve been vulnerable to that."
