Girardi: Hughes will be OK

By Wallace Matthews

DETROIT -- Joe Girardi said he didn't believe the back problems that forced Phil Hughes out of Game 3 of the ALCS after just three innings were serious enough to keep him out of a possible Game 7 if the Yankees can find a way to turn this series around.

"We think he's going to be available for us. Not today, but after today maybe," Girardi said before Game 4. "I think he's going to be fine."

Hughes had held the Tigers to three hits and one run, on a solo home run by Delmon Young leading off the fourth, before departing one batter later with a stiff back. If the Yankees are able to win the next three games to force a Game 7 at Yankee Stadium on Sunday, Hughes would be on rotation to start it.

Asked if he thought Hughes would be able to make that start, Girardi smiled and said, "Let's get there first."
