Soriano expected to opt out
By Wallace Matthews
Closer Rafael Soriano is expected to opt out of the last year of his three-year contract by today's 5 p.m. deadline.
Yankees GM Brian Cashman said via text message that he has not yet been officially notified by Soriano's agent, Scott Boras, that his client would opt out of the deal, which calls for a $14 million salary for 2013.
But Boras indicated in a phone conversation with ESPNNewYork.com last week that an opt-out was likely considering Soriano's outstanding 2012 season, in which he saved 42 games in 45 opportunites filling in for the injured Mariano Rivera.
The news of Soriano's pending opt-out was first reported Wednesday morning by CBSSports.com.
