Links: Waiting on Andy, Hiro & Mo
By Andrew Marchand
The Yankees are playing the waiting game. They are waiting for Andy Pettitte to decide if he will retire or not. They are waiting on if Hiroki Kuroda will return to the Bronx or go west. And they are waiting to finalize an agreement with Mariano Rivera.
The Yankees, as Dr. Seuss would put it, are in "The Waiting Place."
Still, it is my hunch that Yankees GM Brian Cashman will have a winter surprise. The Yankees' 2012 ended with a near collapse in the regular season and a real meltdown in the postseason. The team knows already that Derek Jeter, 38, will limp into camp, fighting to be ready for Opening Day. Rivera, 43, will try to return from the toughest injury of his career. Ace CC Sabathia had his elbow cleaned up this offseason. Alex Rodriguez will try to rehab his game after his playoff benching.
So the Yankees need a jolt of life. That is why I think Cashman will not go into next spring just standing pat, even as he deals with the $189 million mandate.
Perhaps there could be some pre-Thanksgiving news, though there is no timetable for any of these discussions and the Yankees have valued patience over everything else. So they are just waiting.
