State of the Binder: Day 6

By Andrew Marchand

TAMPA, Fla. -- Not surprisingly, Joe Girardi's group interview session focused on Derek Jeter, following the captain's news conference.

1.) CAPTAIN COMEBACK: Girardi said he believes Jeter will do everything he can to be ready by Opening Day.

"That's who he is," Girardi said. "I get a lot of the same answers that you do. 'How do you feel?' 'Great.' We are just going to have to see how he progresses."

Girardi said that there is no set time-table on to when Jeter will play in an exhibtion game. When he does, it will first be as a DH, Girardi said.

2.) NUNEZ OR NIX? Jayson Nix and Eduardo Nunez are the two main players vying to be Jeter's backup. Girardi mentioned prospect Corban Joseph and the injured David Adams as possibilities, but that seems highly unlikely.

3.) ALL HIT, NO GLOVE: Travis Hafner said he hasn't thrown a ball in five years. It sounds like it will be six.

"He's a DH," Girardi said.

As he kept talking about Hafner, Girardi giggled and continueing saying, "D-H, D-H."

Hafner will be the everyday DH against righties.

4.) NOT EXACTLY WIN ONE FOR THE GIPPER:With his full squad in on Monday, Girardi said his pre-workout message will be, "Let's get better. That's the bottom line. Let's get prepared and let's get better."
