Yankes lose to O's, 5-1

By Wallace Matthews

SARASOTA, Fla. -- The Yankees lost to the Baltimore Orioles, 5-1, today at Ed Smith Stadium in a preseason game that at times looked an awful lot like many of their regular season games last year.

Despite getting three hits from leadoff batter Brett Gardner, one of them a bunt up the third base line, the Yankees squandered threats in the first and third innings and went 1-for-6 with runners in scoring position. Meanwhile, the Orioles, playing many of their regulars, scored four runs off three Yankees pitchers in the first four innings.

The Yankees sent only Gardner, Francisco Cervelli, Jayson Nix and the two players who are now vying for the left-field position vacated when Curtis Granderson suffered a broken arm on Sunday, Juan Rivera and Matt Diaz. Neither did much to stake a claim to the job; Diaz grounded into a first-inning double play, helping to erase a first-and-second, no out threat, and grounded out to end the third, again with two runners on. Rivera went 0-for-3. Nix had two singles and the Yankees had three other hits, including an RBI single by non-roster infielder Walter Ibarra in the ninth inning to account for their only run.

Lefthander Vidal Nuno started for the Yankees and allowed a run on two first-inning doubles, but struck out five, all looking, in his two innings. Bryan Mitchell allowed a run in the third sand Corey Black allowed two in the fourth. Baltimore got its final run off Ryan Pope in the sixth. The Yankees are now 1-2 in preseason play and have scored just one run in the two losses.
