Hughes goes swimming, will throw Sunday
By Wallace Matthews
TAMPA, Fla. -- Phil Hughes took another step toward returning to the mound Friday, completing a more intense workout in the pool at the Yankees' minor-league complex, and if all goes well in his final pool session on Saturday, he will throw a ball on Sunday for the first time since the Yankees shut him down on Feb. 18 with a bulging disk in his upper back.
"If he comes back and feels good tomorrow, I think that’s the plan of attack," Joe Girardi said. "He did a lot of stuff today in the pool, he did some arm rotation, and that is a good sign."
Girardi still has no timetable for Hughes' return, and Hughes has said he needs to make his first spring start by mid-March to have any chance of being ready to start the regular season with the team on April 1.
"Let’s just get him to throw Sunday and I’ll feel good about it," Girardi said.
