Morning Notes

By Wallace Matthews

TAMPA, Fla. -- It's the real Yankees versus the Paper Tigers today at The Boss. Joe Girardi is sending out a lineup that will probably be pretty close to his Opening Day lineup, but Detroit, which has a split-squad game at home in Lakeland today, is only bringing a handful of regulars: Omar Infante, Torii Hunter and that's about it.

IVAN-A START: His rival for the No. 5 starting spot, David Phelps, has already made two starts but this will be the first time out for Ivan Nova, who has thrown a couple of live BPs. As with all starters going out the first time, Nova will work two innings or 35 pitches.

CATCHING UP TO DO: Chris Stewart, who got tossed from Thursday's game against the Blue Jays, and has probably fallen behind the sizzling Francisco Cervelli (5-of-6 baserunners thrown out), gets the start today and hopefully makes it past the first two innings.

WELCOME MATT: Matt Diaz, who has certainly fallen behind Juan Rivera (.462, 3 doubles) in the competition to be the starting LF while Curtis Granderson recovers from his broken arm, gets a chance to catch up today against Tigers righty Shawn Hill.

WHERE'S MY RIVALRY?: Here are the "regulars' the Yankees are sending to Ft. Myers tomorrow to play the Red Sox: Brett Gardner, Jayson Nix, Eduardo Nunez, Juan Rivera, Dan Johnson. Adam Warren will make the start.
