Ichiro OK after traffic accident
TAMPA, Fla. -- New York Yankees outfielder Ichiro Suzuki was unhurt in a traffic accident that occurred Saturday afternoon after he left George Steinbrenner Field following a preseason game between the Yankees and the Detroit Tigers.
Ichiro's Land Rover struck a car driven by a woman who cut him off making a left turn on Dale Mabry Highway, less than three miles from the ballpark. According to a Tampa police officer at the scene, Ichiro was not at fault. According to reports, the driver of the other car received a summons. Ichiro did not.
"You're going to have to do a lot worse to have me get hurt, I guess," a smiling Ichiro said in the Yankees clubhouse Sunday morning.
Ichiro's car was not so lucky. Asked how much damage the vehicle suffered, Ichiro laughed and said, "Sayonara."
Ichiro was not scheduled to make the trip to Fort Myers with a watered-down Yankees squad that will face the Boston Red Sox on Sunday. He went through normal workouts in the morning and was to see a team physician later in the day as a precaution.
