Teixeira hurt, pulls out of WBC

By Andrew Marchand

TAMPA, Fla. -- Another day, another New York Yankees injury.

First baseman Mark Teixeira has left the United States' World Baseball Classic team after feeling pain in his right forearm taking batting practice in Arizona on Tuesday. He was a late scratch for the United States' game with the Chicago White Sox.

“I was kind of shocked,” said Yankees manager Joe Girardi.

Girardi said the initial X-rays were negative, but that Teixeira would go for more tests.

“He was taking swings in the cage and felt something,” Girardi said. “It was in his hand or wrist. I’m sure there will be more tests.”

Girardi said he didn’t know the severity of the injury or what the next step will be.

“I’m sure our people will want to see him too,” Girardi said.

The Yankees' backup first basemen include Juan Rivera, Dan Johnson and Kevin Youkilis. Youkilis is already replacing the injured Alex Rodriguez at third.
