Pregame notes: Nova injured again

By Wallace Matthews

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Yankees right-hander Ivan Nova, already on the disabled list with inflammation of the right triceps, injured himself while playing catch in Tampa on Sunday morning and will not be recalled to pitch during Monday's makeup doubleheader against the Indians in Cleveland.

"He felt something in his left side," said manager Joe Girardi, who said he assumed the injury to be an oblique strain. "So it won't be him [on Monday]. Let's see what happens today, and then we'll have a decision for you."

Girardi said David Phelps will pitch the first game Monday, but had yet to settle on a second-game pitcher. Among the candidates are long relievers Adam Warren and Vidal Nuno, either or both of whom might have to be used in Sunday's game against the Royals.

Girardi said he had ruled out using CC Sabathia, who pitched just four innings in Thursday's rain-delayed game in Denver against the Rockies.

• The Yankees expect to face a pair of right-handers on Monday, Justin Masterson (3-3, 2.63) in the first game and Trevor Bauer (1-1, 2.70) in the second.

• Girardi would not reveal who the Yankees would add as a 26th man for the day, allowed under the rules in the case of an unscheduled doubleheader, but the guess is it will be infielder Corban Joseph.

• Girardi hinted the Yankees might call up a pitcher from Triple-A and keep him in a nearby hotel in Cleveland, to be activated between games in case of an emergency like an injury or an extra-innings game with many pitchers being used. In that case, the most likely candidate is RHP Brett Marshall.

• Girardi said neither Robinson Cano nor Vernon Wells will play both games in the field on Monday. One or both could be used as DHs.
