Game 78: Rangers (45-33) @ Yankees (42-35)

By Wallace Matthews

Here's the lineup for today's series finale against the Rangers and LHP Derek Holland:

Ichiro Suzuki CF
Jayson Nix SS
Robinson Cano 2B
Vernon Wells RF
Zoilo Almonte LF
Lyle Overbay 1B
David Adams 3B
Alberto Gonzalez 3B
Austin Romine C

Phil Hughes RHP

Brett Gardner is being given "just a day off,'' according to Joe Girardi, who also said Gardner was "a little under the weather'' with a head cold . . . Asked if Hughes was pitching for his rotation spot today, Girardi said, "I'm not saying that. This guy needs to pitch well fo rus, but I'm not saying he's pitching for a spot'' . . . Vernon Wells, who has not started a game since June 20, gets the start in right with Gardner on the bench and is hitting cleanup today, but Girardi did not flinch when asked if Wells had lost the LF job to Zoilo Almonte. "(Wells) would have played today against the lefty somewhere, no matter what. But we’re running Z out there. He’s played pretty well, we’ll continue to do that.'' Girardi said Wells has handled his demotion "very professionally. He's been ready to play every day and he's worked very hard.'' . . . Hughes is 2-1 lifetime against the Rangers with a 2.00 ERA in four starts, but this is the first time he has started against them at Yankee Stadium. . . . Derek Holland has never beaten the Yankees. He is 0-5 in 7 starts with an 8.85 ERA.
