Pregame: Joe says Yanks have energy
By Andrew Marchand
TORONTO --- Alfonso Soriano implied on Tuesday night that the Yankees lacked some energy. Joe Girardi disagreed.
"I didn't [think we lacked energy]," Girardi said before Wednesday night's must-win. "When you don't score runs and you don't have many baserunners after two innings, there are not a whole lot of high-fives in here. You don't get high-fives for making outs. I hear guys cheering. That is something. But we didn't do nothing last night. The atmosphere is obviously a little different than it was the last few days [in Boston]. That combination, maybe he felt that way."
After the Yankees' 2-0 loss to the Blue Jays, Soriano said, the Yankees needed to play “with more energy, and do those little things we didn’t do.” Girardi said he hadn't talked to Soriano about it, but he might.
J.R. TIME:J.R. Murphy is starting behind the plate over Chris Stewart, because Girardi said he doesn't want Stewart to get too worn down. Stewart, who continues to struggle at the plate (.130 in 23 at-bats this month), has played a little extra with Austin Romine still out with concussion. Romine said he is feeling better, but he is not ready for game action yet. Romine once had a concussion that kept him out a month so he knows to be extra careful.
HUFF ON DECK: As expected, Girardi said that David Huff will be called upon if starter Phil Hughes struggles.
