Pregame notes: Phil Hughes Day
By Andrew Marchand
NEW YORK -- In what might not be as emotional of a start as Andy Pettitte's on Sunday, Phil Hughes will take the mound for what will likely be the final time as a Yankee in the Bronx on Wednesday.
With CC Sabathia done for the season, Hughes will start Wednesday's must-win game against the Rays. On Thursday, it will be Ivan Nova. On Friday, it will be Andy Pettitte making his final regular season start in Houston, near his hometown of Deer Park.
"After that we'll figure it out," Joe Girardi said.
In other words, if they are still alive, it will be all hands on deck. If they aren't some kids will get a chance.
BOBBLEHEADS: The first 18,000 fans at Yankee Stadium Tuesday were supposed to receive Mariano Rivera Bobbleheads when they arrived. One problem? The bobbleheads apparently hadn't arrived. The Yankees have not given an official reason for the mix-up, but are handing out vouchers to fans that they can use to receive the figurines at some point.
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: Sabathia says he will be an ace again.
"I think I'll be back to myself," Sabathia said. "I know a lot of people have written me off and said that I've thrown too many innings, whatever, whatever, but I'll still be here and still be accountable and still be the guy that signed up for 2009."
