McCann to be introduced on Thursday

By Andrew Marchand

Catcher Brian McCann has passed his physical and will be introduced at Yankee Stadium during a press conference on Thursday.

McCann has signed a five-year deal for $85 million that has a vesting option for a sixth season for $15 million. The contract also includes a no-trade clause. In a statement, Hal Steinbrenner said the Yankees are just getting started.

“The singular and unwavering desire of this organization is to construct a team each and every season designed to play meaningful baseball deep into October,” he said. “In Brian McCann, we feel we have made a significant improvement to a key position, while adding a high-character presence to our clubhouse. Our work this offseason has just begun, but we feel this is an important step towards what will be an exciting and rewarding 2014 season for our fans.”

The Yankees still hope to sign Robinson Cano, while they continue talks with Carlos Beltran, Shin-Soo Choo, Jacoby Ellsbury, Stephen Drew and Omar Infante. They have interest in closer Joe Nathan, but he is on the verge of signing with the Detroit Tigers.

As for McCann, there is no word yet on what number he'll wear. He wore No. 16 for the Atlanta Braves, but that number is retired for Whitey Ford.

The Yankees have yet to announce the time for the press conference.
