Cruz 'ecstatic' for Cano
By Matt Ehalt
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- Although the move may hurt his beloved Yankees for years to come, Giants wide receiver Victor Cruz was thrilled for fellow Roc Nation client Robinson Cano after the former Bomber agreed to a 10-year, $240 million deal with Seattle on Friday.
"I'm ecstatic," Cruz said. "I know him personally and he's a good dude, he's a great guy and I'm happy he was able to get the deal I know he wanted for sure."
Cruz and Cano are part of a small group of athletes that have signed with Roc Nation, led by rap superstar Jay Z. While Jay Z was instrumental in landing Cano his deal, Cruz, who signed a five-year, $43-million extension this offseason, said his agent, Tom Condon, did the work for his.
The Giants receiver said he plans to text Cano and Jay Z to congratulate them, and believes it's a big day for Roc Nation. Cruz said signing with an organization that was right for his mold and brand was key for him, as well as Cano.
"I think it's just a stepping stone," Cruz said. "I think it's just proof that anything can be done if you put your mind into it and have the type of backing and the type of people around you that do the right thing and understand the business. Anything can be done. It's a true testament to the way [Jay Z] does his business and goes about it the right way and he's able to do it."
There were lots of eyes on these contract negotiations with it being Jay Z's first attempt at landing a mega baseball deal, and the rap mogul ultimately came through, helping make Cano one of MLB's highest-paid players. Cruz pointed to the deal as evidence of what Jay Z is able to accomplish.
"The proof is in the deal," Cruz said. "I'm happy for Robinson Cano, he deserved every bit of that money, every bit of that contract. Hopefully he goes to Seattle and does some good things for that organization."
Even with Cano leaving the Yankees, Cruz is still going to be pulling for him.
"I'm a Robinson Cano fan, I'll tell you that. I'll be Yankees through and through. I'm definitely a Robinson fan," Cruz said."I hope he does well."
