Game 103: Yankees @ Rays

10:09: Bartlett taps first pitch to Jeter for game-ending force out. Another great game in what is becoming a terrific rivalry

10:08: Mo shatters Willy Aybar's bat but ball parachutes over Cano into short right for a single. Bartlett at bat

10:07: Upton grounds to short and Rays are down to their final out

10:06: Mo strikes out Sean Rodriguez for the first out

10:02: Swisher (K) and Granderson (fly out) end the inning and Yankees are just one typical Mariano Rivera inning from avoiding falling into a first-place tie

10:01: Cano now leads the Yankees in HRs with 21. Or, five more than the cleanup hitter.

9:58: But that's OK, because Cano turns on a 1-0 fastball and parks it in the RF stands, Yanks take a 5-4 lead and Mo is up in the pen

9:57: And just like last night, he does something tiny, popping out to the shortstop, who tumbles backward after making the catch. That's now 37 HR-less ABs, sole possession of fourth longest drought of his season

9:55: Just like last night, A-Rod in position to do something huge here leading off the ninth

9:53: D-Rob, who has certainly become the Eighth-Inning Guy, pitches a strong eighth, striking out Brignac and Joyce; Rays closer Rafael Soriano on to pitch the ninth vs. Mr. 599, Cano and Swisher

9:46: Benoit sets Yanks down easily; David Robertson in to pitch the eighth

9:43: Berkman strikes out on a check swing, now 0-for-4 in his Yankee bow

9:38: Pretty fair pitcher's duel: Vazquez 6-1/3 IP, 8H, 4ER, 1 HR; Garza 7IP, 5H, 4ER, 9Ks, 2 HRs. Game tied at 4 in the eighth

9:37: Crawford grounds out and we go to the eighth, RHP Joaquin Benoit replaces Garza for the Rays

9:36: Good running catch by Granderson on Jaso's soft fly to short center. Two out, one on, Crawford batting

9:32: Javy walks Jason Bartlett with one out and Girardi replaces him with Logan to pitch to left-handed hitting Jaso, who has two doubles and a triple tonight

9:28: Vazquez going out to start the seventh, but with 96 pitches thrown, Boone Logan is warming in the pen

9:23: Swisher homers to right on a full-count curveball leading off the seventh and we're tied again, this time at 4

9:21: Some quick research reveals A-Rod's 36 AB HR-less streak is tied with his fourth-longest drought of the year. He's also had streaks of 59, 46 and 40 ABS w/o a HR this season, plus one other of 36

9:14: Rays re-take the lead, 4-3, on Joyce's HR to right on first pitch from Javy, a slider up in the zone

9:06: Garza freezes Cano with a fastball at the knees to end the inning, but Yankees tie it on Tex 2-run HR

9:02: And the Alex Show is off the air as the star strikes out on a slider. The tally: 36 HR-less ABs

9:01: And for the third time tonite, the Alex Show is on the air

9:00: Teixeira crushes Garza's first pitch high into the RF seats, his 21st HR ties the game at 3

8:59: Berkman, in his Yankee debut pops out for the third time tonight

8:58: Jeter leads off the sixth with a double off the base of the RF wall, first Yankee hit by someone not named Cano

8:55: Javy Ks Crawford on a hi FB to limit the damage in the fifth

8:51: Jaso scorches one past Teixeira for a two-out double; Rays DH now has two doubles and a triple in three ABds

8:50: Rays take a 3-1 lead as Bartlett's sac fly to right brings home Upton

8:47: Upton leads off the home fifth with a ground-rule 2B into lower left-field seats

8:44: Another strong inning from Garza in the fifth, who in a world without Robinson Cano would be working on another no-hitter

8:36: Javy pitches a 1-2-3 fourth

8:28: Swisher strikes out for second time in 2 ABs to end the inning

8:25: Cano doubles into the LF corner, his second double of the night

8:23: And he pops to right on the 3-2 fastball. That's 35 homerless at-bats since No. 599

8:22: A-Rod hitting with a full count again

8:21: Garza ahead, 1-2

8:20: Tex bounces out to SS leading off the fourth and here comes A-Rod

8:10: Rays back in the lead on Crawford's RBI single, 2-1 in the third

8:08: Jaso's tailing liner to LF corner eludes Gardner's dive, he's on third with one out triple in the third

8:04: Garza pitches an overpowering third, striking out Gardner and Jeter, getting Berkman to pop to third

7:56: Javy sets the Rays down in order in the second

7:46: Tie game as Granderson drives in A-Rod with sac fly to left

7:41: Swisher goes down looking on a 3-2 curve for the first out

7:37: No back to back no-nos for Garza as Cano doubles to RF corner, A-Rod to third

7:35: A-Rod walks on a 3-2 fastball that sails inside

7:34: Garza moves A-Rod off the plate with his first pitch, gets him hacking at a cutter with his second, freezes him with a curve with his third. 1-2 count

7:25: Rays on the board after a sac fly by Longoria, 1-0 after one, and A-Rod coming up to start the second

7:21: Rays have first and third, none out and Longoria batting after a leadoff double to the RF wall by John Jaso and a bunt single by Carl Crawford

7:15: Lance Berkman lines out softly to right in his first at-bat as a Yankee

7:11: Matt Garza's first pitch is tapped to second by Jeter for the first out of the game.

4:26 p.m. Lance Berkman is in the lineup for the Yankees tonight vs. the Tampa Bay Rays -- he will be the DH and bat second.
