Game 38: Yankees (19-18) vs. Mets (18-19)
By Wallace Matthews
NEW YORK -- A day full of disturbing news for the Yankees, between the injuries to Carlos Beltran (right elbow), Ichiro Suzuki (lower back) and Shawn Kelley going on the disabled list with persistent pain in his lower back. Plus, they have lost eight of their past 12 games and five straight to the Mets, who seem to enjoy hitting at Yankee Stadium a lot more than hitting at Citi Field.
Tonight, they're relying on Vidal Nuno to reverse the trend. Here's the lineup Joe Girardi is sending out against righty starter Zack Wheeler:
Babe Ruth's Hall of Fame plaque made an appearance Tuesday night at the Stadium.
NOTES: The Yankeees recalled Zoilo Almonte from Triple-A Scranton, where he was hitting .273 with six home runs and 24 RBIs, to replace Kelley on the roster. Girardi indicated the Yankees are likely to add a pitcher as well in a day or two. ... Still no decision as to who will start Thursday's game, which would have been CC Sabathia's day if he, too, wasn't on the DL (knee inflammation). One guy it won't be is Alfredo Aceves, who worked Monday night and is available out of the pen tonight, too. ... Sabathia was being examined by Dr. James Andrews today in Pensacola. ... Girardi did not know if any further tests would be done on Kelley, who was being examined by team doctor Chris Ahmad today. ... With Kelley down, Girardi said Adam Warren would inherit his duties as the setup man for David Robertson, and Dellin Betances would become the seventh-inning man. ... Nuno has started against the Mets once, working six innings and taking the loss last May 30 in a 3-1 Mets victory at Yankee Stadium. The Yankees have never faced Wheeler. ... Babe Ruth's Hall of Fame plaque was on display behind home plate before the game, the first time it has ever been removed from the museum in Cooperstown. It will be displayed at Grand Central Station this week, and Hall of Fame executive director Jeff Idelson said, "If it's going to leave the Hall, the first place it should go is Yankee Stadium."
