First Pitch: Now, this will be quite a tale

10/18/2012

When the Yankees lost Derek Jeter in Game 1, I wrote a column saying this could be the greatest Yankee story ever told. Now, it could be even greater.

Because not only are the Bombers down 3-0. But now, the one wild card they had going for them has been taken away by the rain in Detroit. The idea that CC Sabathia could start and win Game 4 and then come back and beat Justin Verlander in Game 7 is out of the window.

Brian Cashman said the Yankees would not put Sabathia on less than three days rest. Since he is pitching on Thursday, he won't be able to start a possible Game 7 on Sunday.

So if the Yankees are going to win a championship, they are going to have to do it with one more obstacle standing in their way. Sabathia will start today and that is it.

UP NOW:A lot of news. The Yankees may talk trade with the Marlins about Alex Rodriguez. And A-Rod might be willing to waive his no-trade. The Yankees knew A-Rod was trying to pick up a girl during Game 1. Jeter could be out to start next season. Ian O'Connor has a column advising A-Rod to consider leaving town quietly.

ON-DECK: Sabathia vs. Max Scherzer in Game 4 at 4:07. Rain is in the forecast.

QUESTION OF THE DAY: What would you give up for A-Rod if you were the Marlins or another potential Yankees trading partner?
