1. LIFE OF A-ROD: Life as Alex Rodriguez is not all bad. Today, he was due a nice check from the Yankees to the tune of $3 million.
Why is A-Rod being paid three big bills by the Yankees, despite being suspended without pay for the season? Well, as part of his 10-year, $275 million contract, he received a signing bonus that would be paid in installments. So there was a little $3 million payment that showed up in his direct deposit.
On Tuesday night, we had some fun on Twitter with Rodriguez, coming up with new walk-up songs. I started with my own, courtesy of Johnny Cash. Here is mine and a couple of the best ones.
Los Angeles Dodgers and Clayton Kershaw are working to come up with a new megadeal by this Friday.
So how does that impact the Yankees? Well, Kershaw is a free agent after this season and might wait for a titanic bidding war for his services. He is probably the best pitcher in baseball. So the Yankees would want him badly.
His agent is Casey Close. Do you know who else is represented by Close? None other than Masahiro Tanaka, who must come up with a decision by 5 p.m. on Jan. 24.
The Dodgers -- judging by some reports, which have been pretty unreliable during the whole Tanaka saga -- seem as if they may be the biggest obstacle to the Yankees. If they sign Kershaw for $250 million or so, are they also going to give Tanaka $100-plus million too? Can anyone say "new Yankees" if that happens?
Or do they sign the proven Kershaw and let the unproven (in the States) starter, Tanaka, go to the Bronx?
3. OWNER'S MEETING: Hal Steinbrenner and Randy Levine are in Arizona. We have the great Jayson Stark on the premises.
