TAMPA, Fla. -- In spring training, there are no really big days, just days to get through. On Thursday the Yankees have one of those days that when you check back at 10 p.m. and everyone is still healthy, it will be a success.
In the afternoon, CC Sabathia, coming off knee surgery, will throw his first simulated game of the spring. In the evening, Masahiro Tanaka is expected to start and go two innings against the Braves. It is the first time that Tanaka will appear in an exhibition game.
"It is the next step in their progression," GM Brian Cashman said. "Mentally, I've been at this job for a long time and over time I used to sweat things that I couldn't control."
Cashman doesn't do that anymore, but he still will be checking in on Tanaka and Sabathia.
"It is not in my control if Tanaka stays healthy for 10 more years or 10 more days," Cashman said. "It is not something that I'm going to worry about it. If it declares itself in an adverse way, we'll just have to deal with it and do whatever the next course of action is, which would be a surgery you would imagine. He's been great. Everything has been as good as we could expect for all those guys."
Notes: Alex Rodriguez, after hitting his first homer on Wednesday, is expected to be the DH on Thursday. ... The players don't have to report until 12:30 p.m. for the night game.
