New York Yankees: Philadelphia Phillies

TAMPA, Fla. -- Philadelphia Phillies third baseman Michael Young is willing to waive his no-trade clause to join the New York Yankees, baseball sources said, and now the two teams are trying to work out a deal before the 4 p.m. deadline.

The Boston Red Sox are also interested in Young, sources said.

If Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez is suspended by baseball under the CBA, he would be unable to play even during an appeal. The Yankees have had little to no production at third base. Young could also play first base, where the Yankees have struggled versus lefties. Joe Girardi would have him DH, as well.

Young has a .770 OPS against righties and a .714 against lefties this season. He is a free agent at the end of the year.

Young, 36, is a seven-time All-Star with a career batting average of .300.

Afternoon notes: Yanks lose, 4-1

March, 19, 2013

CLEARWATER, Fla. -- In a game that was decidedly secondary to the story that preceded it -- Derek Jeter's removal from the lineup because of stiffness near the are where he broke his left ankle last October -- the Yankees lost to the Phillies, 4-1 on Tuesday at Bright House Field.

The Yankees took a 1-0 lead on Ichiro Suzuki's RBI double in the fourth, but the Phillies got solo home runs from Domonic Brown and Ryan Howard, and the Yankees only had one other hit, a single by Brett Gardner, to lose their 15th of 24 spring training games.

WARREN REPORT: Coming off a disaster in which he allowed eight runs to the Blue Jays in 1 1/3 innings, Adam Warren was a lot better Tuesday, allowing seven hits in 3 2/3 innings but holding the Phillies to two runs, one on a Brown's homer. Why should you care? Because if anything happens to any of the Yankees' starting pitchers, Warren would be the first call-up option from AAA Scranton, that's why.

LOOK OUT, IT'S MUSTY! In his first game back since nearly denting the steel railing at The Boss in a full-speed collision on Friday, Ronnier Mustelier nearly ran over the ball girl sitting on a folding chair down the left-field line chasing down a foul ball. Thankfully for all concerned, Musty pulled up just before what would have been utter carnage.

BOONE DOCKS: After being shut down for a week with a sore elbow, Boone Logan finally got onto the mound this spring and performed well, pitching a scoreless fifth and striking out Brown and Laynce Nix after allowing a leadoff single to Chase Utley. "It may be premature, but I feel like I'm in midseason form," Logan said.

COMEBACK KID: David Aardsma, coming off Tommy John surgery 18 months ago, pitched a strong eight, with two strikeouts.

Lineup: Jeter returns to shortstop

March, 13, 2013
TAMPA, Fla. -- New York Yankees captain Derek Jeter will play shortstop for the first time since breaking his ankle in October.

He also will bat leadoff when the Yankees play host to the Philadelphia Phillies at 7 p.m. Mariano Rivera is expected to pitch one inning in relief.

Ichiro Suzuki LF
Kevin Youkilis 3B
Juan Rivera 1B
Ben Francisco RF
Matt Diaz DH
Chris Stewart C

Gil Velazquez 2B

Andy Pettitte LHP
TAMPA, Fla. -- After coming through his bullpen feeling fine, Mariano Rivera said he is set to pitch again Wednesday night.

"It felt good," Rivera said Monday.

Rivera will pitch one inning in relief against the Phillies on Wednesday. Rivera made his debut Saturday, retiring the side and striking out two in his first game action since suffering a torn ACL last May.

It could be quite the old-timer's day with Andy Pettitte set to take the hill and Derek Jeter possibly going to play shortstop.

The Phillies, according to a tweet from Buster Olney. He said they would have first needed to move Joe Blanton's money.

Pennsylvania loves them some A.J. Burnett.
