Gilbride on Bomar and even Rolle at quarterback

Offensive coordinator Kevin Gilbride said that he can’t remember having just one quarterback going into a game.

But that doesn’t mean he lacks confidence in third-string quarterback Rhett Bomar. Technically, the Giants have newly-signed quarterback Dominic Randolph on the roster but Bomar is going to take more snaps than ever has as a pro on Saturday against the Steelers. With Eli Manning still nursing fresh stitches on his forehead and Jim Sorgi out with a shoulder injury for possibly the remainder of the preseason, Bomar gets to showcase his skills.

“Hopefully very efficient, very effective, and a lot of touchdowns,” Gilbride said of what Saturday may be like. “I thought he played terrific when he got the chance (against the Jets). I think that he needs to block out that he’s not going in third, he’s going in first, and just play. Because of the guys around him, he should feel even better about the way he looked last Monday night, which I thought was terrific.”

The Giants signed Randolph, a rookie free agent they had in their rookie minicamp in May. But Randolph has little time to get acclimated. He actually was at the Richmond airport getting ready to connect through Newark Airport to go to Nantucket for vacation when the Giants called him on Wednesday. The Giants picked him up at Newark, signed him and Randolph spent Thursday's practice going over Steelers’ scout work.

Gilbride said they would have safety Antrel Rolle work a little bit at quarterback as likely an emergency quarterback. Rolle has wanted to play some wildcat.

“We also have Antrel limbered up for a few plays, so we’ll see what he can do,” Gilbride said.
