As ESPNNewYork.com reported Friday was the direction it was headed, the Mets have avoided a showdown with Oliver Perez about whether he would go to the minors by placing the left-hander on the disabled list with right knee tendinitis.
That's the same knee Perez had surgically cleaned last season. The Mets reported that Perez showed up at Citi Field on Friday complaining of discomfort and was sent for an MRI. He will be dispatched to Florida -- the same plan that would have taken place had Perez been demoted.
The decision clears roster room for the activation of Jon Niese for Saturday's start against the Florida Marlins.
