Gary Matthews Jr. has been placed on release waivers by the Mets. He is expected to clear and officially be released Tuesday. Matthews hit .190 with one RBI in 58 at-bats this season. The Angels are responsible for $21.5 million of the $23.5 million owed to Matthews in 2010 and '11.

There is zero chance Matthews would get claimed because the money the Angels are sending the Mets does not transfer to the claiming team if a club wanted Matthews and put in a claim.

NOT 2B: Double-A second baseman Reese Havens left Friday's game after one at-bat at Trenton with an oblique injury. Injuries to oblique muscles during spring training delayed the start to Havens' season.
Adam Rubin has covered the Mets since 2003. He's a graduate of Mepham High School on Long Island and the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. He joined ESPNNewYork after spending 10 years at the New York Daily News.
