Castillo's minor development

Luis Castillo, who has been on the disabled list since June 4 with bruised feet, is scheduled to begin a minor league rehab assignment next week, Jerry Manuel said. That should allow Castillo to be activated when the Mets return from the All-Star break on July 15 in San Francisco, according to the manager.

Ruben Tejada has done a solid job handling the middle infield since his promotion coincided with Castillo landing on the DL -- primarily at second base, and the past few days at shortstop with Jose Reyes sidelined. However, Manuel speculated it would not be possible to keep Tejada at the major league level once Castillo is eventually activated.

Tejada, 20, had a 10-game hitting streak from June 12-27, which is tied for the longest in the majors by a rookie this season. It was the longest by a Mets rookie since Jason Phillips also hit in 10 straight games from Aug. 9-20, 2003.

"If Castillo was on the roster, it would be tough for Tejada to stay, as young as he is, at the major league level," Manuel said.

Tejada is hitting .257 with four RBIs in 70 at-bats with the Mets this season. He opened the season the roster, until Reyes was activated from the DL following his thyroid issue.

"Obviously he has to prove that, but for me, I think he's going to be a great -- a good -- second baseman at this level," Manuel said. "I'll take Tejada at any time. I just like the way he plays the game. I think he puts good at-bats together. I think he plays smart. He's versatile."
