Johan Santana discusses the injury that forced him from Thursday's start in Atlanta after five innings. The Mets identified it as a left pectoral strain. Pitching coach Dan Warthen momentarily mentioned Santana's shoulder.
Santana has now made 16 starts of five-plus innings while allowing one run or fewer, the most in Major League Baseball. He is three shy of matching the franchise record, by Dwight Gooden in 1985, according to ESPN Stats & Information.

• Angel Pagan replaced Chris Carter for defense in right field in the seventh inning. Pagan's turn never came to bat, and Jerry Manuel suggested he might have needed to bunt. • Mike Nickeas is expected to make his first major league start Saturday, catching Jenrry Mejia. They were batterymates at two levels of the minor leagues this year.
