When the Giants selected South Florida defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul 15th overall in last month's draft, it seemed like a clear sign that Osi Umenyiora's days with the team were numbered. But general manager Jerry Reese and Tom Coughlin remained firm in their stance that Umenyiora wasn't going anywhere. It seemed like even Umenyiora was a little surprised by their support.
Now Jason LaCanfora of the NFL Network reports that general managers who inquired about a trade for Umenyiora were "rebuffed immediately" during the draft. That will set up an interesting situation this summer in which everyone will strain to see who lines up as the starting defensive end. You'd have to think that Justin Tuck and Mathias Kiwanuka will remain the starters heading into the next minicamp, but you never know what new defensive coordinator Perry Fewell might have up his sleeve.
And since Pierre-Paul didn't exactly make the best first impression this past weekend, I don't think the Giants are in a hurry to rush him into the rotation.
