New York Giants defensive end Osi Umenyiora recently traveled to Colorado to visit a hip specialist but he will not undergo surgery before the season, according to ESPNNewYork.com's Ohm Youngmisuk. Umenyiora has had lingering issues with his hip since suffering a torn hip flexor in 2006.

It's hard to say whether the injury will hinder the Pro Bowler's attempt to beat out Mathias Kiwanuka for a starting job. Umenyiora's benching last season caused him to threaten retirement February if he didn't regain his old role. But general manager Jerry Reese and Tom Coughlin haven't made any guarantees to Umenyiora. He'll be expected to show up and earn his playing time just like everyone else on the roster.

When the Beast arrives in Albany on Sunday, we'll keep a close eye on that position battle. I think new defensive coordinator Perry Fewell will do a much better job of managing egos. And it's not like Reese and Coughlin are all that bothered by players blowing off some steam in the offseason.

When Reese took over as general manager after the 2006 season, he had to deal with Michael Strahan's public complaints. He never batted an eye during that time and the Giants eventually signed Strahan in time for the 2007 regular season.
