Giants Exclusive: New T-shirts are in!
Posted by ESPN.com's Matt Mosley
Giants coach Tom Coughlin, master of the inspirational T-shirt, released the club's new slogan Saturday, according to a source. Every player on the team now has a T-shirt that says: "Modest in Speech, Superior in Action."
It's a bit more subtle than one of last season's T-shirts, "Talk Is Cheap ...NEVER SATISFIED!"
As I've talked about recently, Coughlin puts a great deal of thought into coming up with this type of stuff. He was enamored with Doris Kearns Goodwin's book "Team of Rivals," which talked about Abraham Lincoln's political career.
So do grown men really gain any motivation from a T-shirt? Well, in Coughlin's mind, a saying or an inspirational story can have a profound effect on a team. He's always been a voracious reader, but his mentor Bill Parcells showed him how to inspire players with powerful words and brief eye contact.
By the way, former Giants defensive end Michael Strahan stopped by training camp in Albany on Saturday. In a press release, someone with a sense of humor in the P.R. department said Strahan, "has attended more training camp practices as a new retiree (one) than he did in his final season as a player (zero)."
And for anyone who thinks Strahan might pull a Favre at some point, it doesn't sound like he's having second thoughts.
"I don't miss it," said Strahan, who is preparing for his first season as an analyst on Fox's NFL studio show.
OK, I'm off to write a Justin Tuck feature. Wish me luck. And yes, I'll be splitting my time between Redskins-Jets and Cowboys-Broncos tonight.
