In case you were away from the laptop over the weekend, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell has begun his review to see if former Giants wide receiver Plaxico Burress violated the league's personal conduct policy. The league confirmed the review, which was first reported by ESPN.
Daily News columnist Gary Myers recently wrote that Goodell should suspend Burress for at least four games in '09 to maintain the integrity of the league. I'm sure Goodell had hoped to let the legal process unfold before making a ruling, but it's not like he's required to wait. It's highly unlikely now that a trial will be set before spring 2010, so there's nothing to prevent a team from signing Burress to a one-year rental contract.
Of course, teams should wait to see what type of penalty Goodell hands down. My best guess is four games since Burress will be treated as a first-time offender under the personal conduct policy. But if Goodell truly wants to send a message, he could sit Burress down for eight games.
Either way, Goodell's in sort of an awkward spot. Now I'm anxious to hear what you guys think.
