Eagles quarterback Michael Vick will be eligible to play in the regular season beginning in Week 3 against the Kansas City Chiefs, according to an ESPN report. NFL commissioner Roger Goodell met with Vick this morning in New Jersey before handing down his ruling.
The timing of Vick's full reinstatement comes as no surprise. I don't think the NFL wanted Vick to debut on the road for obvious reasons. Goodell could've waited until after the Eagles' bye week to reinstate Vick, but he probably saw enough evidence that Vick was making solid progress in his return.
I'm sure Vick is thrilled with the news. Surely he didn't think Goodell would reinstate him for the first or second game. This also helps the Eagles make decisions regarding their 53-man roster. If Vick wasn't going to play until Week 5 or 6, the Eagles may have considered putting him on the roster exempt list, which would've prevented him from practicing and working out with the team.
Now, the Eagles will probably try to trade reserve quarterback A.J. Feeley. I'm sure today's news will give Vick a boost heading into tonight's preseason game. There's a chance he sees significant playing time in the second half. Should be fun.
